Addition and Subtraction

As 2020 approached, as many people, I took a look at my life and tried to focus on an area for a resolution.  Let me start by saying, that I have a great life.  My family is healthy and happy.  I have a job I love and a close knit group of friends.  But like most people my age, there are areas of my life that I am not all that thrilled with, mainly my physical wellness and my seeming lack of time.  Scrolling through my mental list of possible resolutions, it was overwhelming to think about trying to commit to one or two for the whole year. That's when my idea hit... one month at a time.

Throughout 2020, each month, I will make two resolutions: one addition and one subtraction.  For January, I have decided to subtract alcohol and add a daily yoga practice.  At the end of the month, I will evaluate the effects and determine whether to continue with these two changes.  Changes that serve me, I will keep and then release those that do not.

The Addition...

For about the last year and a half, I have had a fairly regular yoga practice. However, it has not been a priority, even though I can feel and see the benefits I have gleaned over the past eighteen months.  On days that I cannot make it to The Corner Mat for a class, I will complete my own practice at home.  I am resolving to practice yoga daily and listening to my body to determine the focus of my practice each day.

The Subtraction...

I am not a heavy drinker, but I am a habitual and social drinker.  Every Friday, I go out for Festive Friday.  Sometimes I will meet friends for a beer after school or have a drink with friends during the week. Most of my social activities involve alcohol. I enjoy this time with my friends, but I have begun to wonder if I would enjoy it more without the booze.  Also, it is always a good idea to take a break from alcohol periodically.  Many people enjoy a dry January after the whirl of the holiday season. I am looking forward to this break and the opportunity to reevaluate my relationship with alcohol.

I look forward to documenting my journey throughout this month and the rest of the year.  Happy New Year!
